A Quick Lexitron Update

I’m planning together to throw together the most desired, relatively simple modifications in a quick Lexitron 1.1 update.  I’ll keep this list updated with things you tell me that I think are good candidates for this update.

A way to pause the game
A way to play your own music
Maybe an option for higher contrast text…?
A way to end the current game

Let me know the things you need right now– the online play and skins won’t be coming in this update, bigger changes will take more time and come later.  Let me know the essentials!

There really needs to be an option to end a current game (or start a new one - same thing if you think about it :))

Suppose I, or someone else, is in the middle of a game, and either I can’t think of any new words to form, or I hate the current letters, or someone else started a game and I want to start my own.. we have to sit and wait for the time to run out. This is silly.

Also, I share my phone with my wife. She thinks she’s better at Lexitron than I. We have to remember the score we get, then when we forget the exact high score we get, we argue about who’s high score is listed on the game’s menu. I know it’s probably hers, because she’s much better at this than I am, but honestly, I really want a high score list to be attributed to names. Also I think it’s important to have which round you made it to in parenthesis next to the high score. Please.

    That said, my wish-list is:

    1) A way to end the current game
    2) High Score list (or at the very list, have the high score attributed with a NAME)

As far as the above wish-list: A way to pause the game would be nice. For now, I just hit the home button to pause.

A way to play your own music? You can! This is the same method you have to use with most games/apps from the App Store:
Just turn off the music in Lexitron, pick a song/playlist you want in iPod app, start up Lexitron (your iPod app music will turn off), press the lock button, press the lock button again (don’t slide yet), double-tap home button, press play, slide to unlock, and now you’re listening to your own music while in Lexitron.

Thanks Digicide! Still wish I could play your Scrabble app on 2.x!

a way to choose who’s game you want to play in the beginning would be great, like three savegameslots or something. One for me, one for my boyfriend, and one for when we play together, that way we dont have to end someones game before playing our own.

and I would really love a high-score-list. perhaps with a way to know if you play unlimited time, 1.minute game, 2 minute game… or is the score different for this to make it fair?

a way to go back to the meny to turn of the music in the middle of the game would be nice, or can you do this now?

  3. San Says:

I am having a problem with this game. It is stuck on the game over screen. How can I start a new game?? Very frustrating

  4. Kar Says:

I thought it would be pretty cool to share your high scores with friends who have the app - a shared high scores list, maybe?

This could be done by inputting a user id/ email address and allowing the user to add email addresses to their high scores list - which updates with their friends scores, so they can see how well their friends are doing.

  5. Rick Says:

    1) Easier to read word list
    2) Way to end game or proceed to next level when 6 letter word is found (there seems to be a way to do this by rapidly tapping the screen until it gives you the option to move on)

  6. Joanna Says:

    Wishlist

    1) Ability to change to portrait mode (This may make it so the word list is easier to read as well)
    2) Easier to read word list in landscape mode.

  7. Sharky Says:

I agree with Joanna! I want portrait (or Vertical) gameplay back! haha!

Also I agree with the custom music, access menu from game (to start new game, etc)
I also like the idea of a High Scores list with possibility of name input, and if not then just the date the high score was achieved.

I am also partial to the old theme, as the new one definitely is distracting, harsh, and harder to read/concentrate on the task at hand.

Oh and did you get that Croatian word list for me? ;) email me and let me know

Besides these things, it does feel good to have Lexitron back. I missed playing for hours and then trying to make different possibilities from Billboards and road signs! haha!

  8. Nick Says:

Bring back the old design!! Pleeeeeeeeease :(

  9. Anonymous Says:

First off respect to digicide for actually taken user opinion seriously. Not many companies do. I look forward to following the updates but even with the new update I don’t see the need to get this new version and will continue to use the old one. That LED read out and those circles and colors just will annoy more than allow me to enjoy.

The simplicity of the game play itself is huge. The old design allowed you to focus on just playing the game. Animations, sounds and all that does nothing but distract and drain precious battery life for a device i use as a cell phone, ipod and lexitron machine all on the same charge.

Some of the comments have really brought up some new problems aside from design. I like being able to just pause the game whenever by pressing the arrow to go to preferences and then come back when i want. Can’t believe you took that out. A high score list with names sounds like a good idea but I could care less about it because I’m not in the habit of passing my iphone around. A way to end the game and reveal what’s left could be an ok option but not a big deal as i don’t give up and say oh well i can’t figure this out. plus having that option on the playing screen could accidentally cause someone to end the current game.

My suggestion would be to just not try and over complicate it. It seems the consensus is that the old design and user experience was better than the new one.

Actually the old game had more animation than this one does…

You do realize you can hit the home button and resume at any time, hence pausing your game.

I personally prefer the new one– it feels more like a solid game with a unified theme.

Over all I like the new interface. I can see the complaint about the word list though, it can be tough to see. It doesn’t bother me though.

A couple of bugs I’ve run into:

My score and round number reset after hitting 50,640 points. No “Game Over” or anything… It just continued to the next level I think I was at round 16 or something when it happened. I know it’s not the Round number that did it cause I’ve been at round 17 before. Anyone Else had this happen?

Sometimes when coming up to the final 5 seconds I get no red flashing or alarm sound. Seems to be random. Works one round then it doesn’t on the next. Odd.

  12. Shrynn Says:

Forgot to add this to my post above.

I would like to put my vote in for the High Score list w/ names. Currently the wife and I just remember who owns the high score.

  13. Ted Says:

I believe it only starts blinking red when time is almost up and you don’t have the 6 letter word yet.

  14. Shrynn Says:

    @Ted: Ah…. That’s probably it. Thanks!

  15. Robert Says:

First, thanks for a nicely done, fun game! Is this the right place to leave bug reports? I’ve hit a very annoying bug two or three times now, resulting in a nice run of success coming to a premature end. Or maybe it’s two bugs.

    1) In one case I got a letter jumble that contained only the single six-letter word — no shorter words (SCUZZY, if I recall correctly). I figured out the word very early, perhaps 1/5 or 1/6 the time had elapsed. I got a screen flash of either PERFECT or QUALIFY (unfortunately, I’m not sure which), and then GAME OVER.

    2) I had another jumble that had only a few words (TRILBY). I got all the words, figuring out TRILBY just a couple of seconds before time expired. Somewhat like the previous example, I got a flash of PERFECT and I *think* I got a flash of QUALIFY, then GAME OVER. When I continued from here it did something odd with the round number. I ended up in round 2 with a score of zero.

    3) I believe I had a third occurrence early on, but I thought at the time I had done something wrong since I was new to the game. In this case there were a substantial number of words, and I did not get all of them. I figured out the six-letter word with a couple of seconds remaining and got QUALIFY followed by GAME OVER.

One of these happened when I was at about 55,000 points so I was a little annoyed :-)

    Thanks!

I fell in love with the pre-App store version. I would gladly pay for it. Maybe if there is a way to “skin” the game, or let the user select which design they want? One of the best games , in my opinion, but I’ll wait to buy when the old version is available. I think the best suggestion from others is keeping a running list of high scores with name or 3 initials (arcade style). Keep up the great work. Keep it simple, you’ve already got a winner!

  17. Mrs Gadget Says:

Thank you for putting this on the app store, i love it. But sadly I agree with other people in that the old version was much easier to see, I am afriad my eyesight is not great and i find the new version very difficult.

  18. Lefteris Says:

Please, give us the option to use the previous layout!!!
When you play it for some hours, you want a simple layout.
The old one was pretty good…

  19. Happy User Says:

First off all id really thank you for putting this on app store. It was the first game i bought cuz i really liked the old one wich i actually prefered. It was kinda easier to focus on the letters. It would be great if i could switch back to the old layout. Less is more.
But dont worry just keep on doing your great work.

    Thanks!

  20. Ndokiman Says:

I’d have to add my wish to see the old interface brought back as an option…or be the only interface. All that red makes me feel like I’m playing an evil game!

  21. blargle Says:

I like Lexitron a lot. … but: I’m getting a problem where it gives me a Game Over when I finish a round even though I got the 6 letter word. Also, when I sleep the iPod in the middle of a round, it restarts the round sometimes, continues the round sometimes, ends the round sometimes, gives me a whole new round sometimes…

But I really, really want a new game button and the ability to keep my music playing.

Also the font used for the letter buttons and the main word is hard to read. I find I get E and F confused and V and Y.

  22. Todd Says:

I’d like to see a little buffer at the end of the timer. If you are clicking in letters too fast and the timer ends, the round will end and take you to the next round without letting you review the words from the previous round (you double clicked just when the round ended). I’ve gotten used to watching the clock closely and if it gets close to the end, I just stop typing in letters and let the round end. Give it a 2-3 second buffer at the end before it allows a double tap to start the next round. This is, of course, on the timed game - which I play mostly.

    Good game though!

  23. renny Says:

    Lexitron is a fantastic app!

    One s-e-r-i-o-u-s glitch:

Lexitron (for iphone, latest version as of 11/11/08, i guess) ends the game when you complete your first qualifying six-letter word AND complete a perfect round in the same submission. In the case of six letters which will make only one word, when you submit it, the game ends. In the case of six letters which will make only one six-letter word and any number of smaller words, if you submit the six-letter word after submitting all the others, the game ends. It says “QUALIFY” and “PERFECT” and then the screen fades in and out and the “GAME OVER” crawl comes across. If there is more than one possible six-letter word it functions normally whether or not you submit the six-letter word last.

  24. King Rhoton Says:

What renny said. This is still a problem almost 4 months along. Could it really be that hard to fix?

    Hi guys,

I know this might be a bit off topic but seeing that a bunch of you own websites, where would the best place be to host. Someone recommended I use Blue Host for $6.95 a month which seems like a great deal. Anyone here on digicide.com using them?
